Welcome to London in Motion, UCL Urban Documentary Film Workshop

The London in Motion project consists of two series of extra-curricular documentary film workshops. This year's focus will be on London as well as East Europeans living in London. During the workshops UCL postgraduate students and staff as well as non-academics from the wider community will learn to apply the basic principles and tools of documentary film making.

The core objective of this project is to explore in an inter-disciplinary manner various new, cheap and easily accessible visual technologies (including mobile phones and mini-DV cameras) as tools for urban research and teaching in urban studies. We choose film as a tool because it has a unique capacity to reveal the personal, anonymous, and collective routines of daily life in cities.

In the long run, the aim of this project is to establish this type of activity on a more permanent basis, and seek cooperation with partners in Eastern Europe and the wider London community.

A selection of films coming out of these workshops will be screened by the Bartlett Urban Film Society, LIDF and the Canary Wharf Film festival in 2009. The films will also be made accessible through this website and we have plans to distribute them through the new UCL iTunesU service.

London in Motion is a joint initiative between School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies (SSEES), the Bartlett (Urban Film Society) and PocketVisions. It is funded by UCL Futures.

This project will run alongside another joint SSEES-Bartlett initiative to hold joint screening events on Eastern European cities in 2008-2009.
